Insights from Mentoring Over 5,000 Executive Leaders

Above: Bobb Biehl shares lessons on leadership and life from working with thousands of executive leaders.

This episode was an honor to record. We were able to interview one of my heroes and a personal mentor for many years, Bobb Biehl.

Bobb has consulted, coached, and mentored over 5,000 executive leaders over his nearly 50-year career. He’s authored 35 leadership and management tools in the area of personal and organizational development.

As a trusted advisor to companies including Chick-fil-A, Furniture Row, Cru, and the European Leadership Forum, Bobb’s expertise has transformed senior executives, offering strategic guidance that has propelled organizations and leaders to new heights.

In our conversation with Bobb, we cover:

  • The value of fog-cutting questions and life-shaping principles.

  • Common traits among successful leaders across both nonprofits and for-profits.

  • Of all 35 leadership and management tools, what tool does Bobb recommend leaders start with.

  • Bobb’s book “Decade by Decade” – how life is surprisingly predictable and how to maximize each decade of your life.

  • The difference between mentoring, coaching, and consulting.

đź’ˇ Takeaway: There are timeless principles and beliefs that have been common to leaders across decades, and the better we understand these, the more clear we can be about where we are in life and how to lead from that place.

Our next episode explores the perceptions of U.S. adults around how good gets done in the world.

How Good Gets Done in the World

Matt Randerson is VP of Growth at Barna Research, the leading organization providing data and insights at the intersection of faith and culture.

Barna recently conducted research with U.S. adults, exploring questions about how good gets done in the world. Specifically, they dug into three areas of questions:

  1. Who is responsible for change

  2. Who do you want to create change

  3. Who do you trust to make change

In our conversation with Matt, we also discuss:

  • Adapting to disruption and the role of understanding trends in discerning and informing the response.

  • How trust in and expectations of different types of institutions differs, including changes in how people view non-profit and for-profit organizations.

  • Preparing to embrace new, innovative approaches instead of sticking to incumbent methods.

  • How humility is key to learning from anyone, and a solution for overcoming biases and fostering inclusivity.

đź’ˇ Takeaway: The way U.S. adults perceive how good gets done in the world is shifting, and nonprofits have work to do in the modern era to establish their role in creating meaningful change in the eyes of the public.

Until next week… Surfs Up! 🌊
